CLIMATE EMERGENCY COP 25
Saudi Arabia to delay oil fossil fuel phase-out world is on track to produce 150 %more coal in 2030 than is consistent with a 2°C pathway, and 280 % more than is consistent with 1.5°C.
the global fossil fuel phase-out is not on the explicit agenda for the ongoing 25th Conference of Parties on climate change (CoP)
large reductions in fossil fuel combustion demanded by both the 1.5° and 2 °C targets
if implemented, will mean a huge impact on communities engaged in the production of fossil fuels
CLIMATE EMERGENCY COP 25
UN member countries are supposed to contribute to the UN budget according to a formula set by the UN General Assembly
Certain countries keep defaulting on their contributions, leading to a building budget emergency which has now come to a head.
The UN Climate Secretariat is facing similar difficulties.
In 2017, it indicated that it needed around 28 million euros in 2018, and a similar amount in 2019 to continue operations.
India is indicated as having no arrears, as is China.
CLIMATE EMERGENCY COP 25
China, India, the EU and the US accounted for almost 60 per cent of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuel combustion in 2017.
World will be on track to meet its targets under Paris Agreement only if these countries / group of countries  meet their respective targets.
lack of progress on overall mitigation is matched by lack of progress in delivering on equity.
India has committed to generate 40 per cent of its installed power capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030
India has also pledged an additional carbon sink equivalent to 2.5-3 billion tonnes of CO2 by 2030 through forest and tree cover
WOOD BUFFALO NATIONAL PARK
The second-largest national park on the planet is a spectacular natural wilderness area rich in biodiversity (Canada)
One of the most famous residents of this majestic national wilderness are wood buffaloes or wood bison (Bison bison athabascae)
Wood buffaloes were almost pushed to the brink of extinction due to over hunting and loss of habitat
However, a successful and meticulous conservation programme, dedicated staff and funding-as well as education and awareness of the public brought the wood buffaloes back from the dangers of sheer extinction in Canada.
NATIONAL ELEPHANT ACTION PLAN
Union Min. of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC)   Technical committee formed to create National Elephant Action Plan
The main focus of the NEAP will be to mitigate human-elephant conflict, along with improvement of habitat
The NEAP will build on the human-elephant conflict management guidelines
highest population is in the Southern region. The maximum instances of human-elephant conflict are in East Central region and West Bengal
between 2015-16 and December 2018, 1,703 human deaths by elephants were recorded
