UPSC has released the examination notification number 05/2024 Civil Service Prelims. All candidates are advised to download official CSE 2024 notification read in detail in order to understand the step-by-step process of registration for the examination.

UPSC Civil Service Exam 2024 Important Dates

The date for registration has officially begun on 14th February, 2024. All eligible candidates can apply through the online portal before the last date for application. The Last Date to apply for Civil Service exam 2024 is 5th March, 2024.

As per the official annual calendar of UPSC the preliminary exams are scheduled on 26th May, 2024. And the Main Examination on 20th September, 2024. Both the dates of preliminary and mains examination might be changed under the discretion of Union Public Service Commission.

UPSC Civil Service Exam 2024 Eligibility

Candidates applying Indian Administrative Service and the Indian Police Service must be a citizen of India. Candidates applying for any other services can be a citizen form India, Nepal, Bhutan or migrants from the listed countries mentioned in the official notification.

UPSC Civil Service Exam 2024 Age limit

The age limit for candidates for the upcoming Civil Exam is a minimum of 21 years old and maximum of 32 years. The upper limit being relaxable for Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe candidates, Other Backward Classes candidates, Defence Services Personnel disabled during hostilities, ex-servicemen who have rendered at least five years of Military Service, and those with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) categories. The Ministry of Defence issues certificates allowing candidates to apply for civil employment and be released on three months’ notice on selection. The upper age limit is also extended for candidates with multiple disabilities, including deaf-blindness.

UPSC Civil Service Exam 2024 Educational Qualification

The essential educational qualification for Civil Service Examination is a graduate degree from a recognised university in India or an equivalent qualification. Professional and technical qualifications recognized by the government as equivalent to a professional and technical degree are also eligible for admission. Candidates who have passed the M.B.B.S examination or equivalent examination leading to a medical degree or certificate but have not completed their internship can be provisionally admitted to the Civil Services Examination. They must provide a copy of a certificate from the concerned authority stating they have passed the final professional examination.

UPSC Civil Service 2024 Exam Process

CSE exam is being conducted in two stages:

  1. Civil Service Preliminary Examination
  2. Civil Service Main Examination

  1. Civil Service Preliminary Examination 2024

The preliminary examination is mainly conducted to filter in the best candidates qualified for stage II. Preliminary Examination comprises of two papers. Each paper will be conducted for total marks 200. Both the papers will be objective type where paper II will be of qualifying nature. Only candidates who have scored a minimum of 33% in paper II and the cut off for Paper I will be as declared by the commission.

Preliminary Examination in Civil Service recruitment is only of qualifying nature. The marks scored in both objective tests will be employed only to determine the qualification of the candidate into Main examination. as per the criteria of UPSC usually twelve to thirteen times of the total number of vacancies according to the merit will be admitted for Civil Service Main examination.

Although the preliminary examination is conducted in a single day the main examination will be spanning over 5 days.

Detailed Syllabus of Paper I is as follows:

  • Current Affairs (National & International).
  • Indian History and National Movement.
  • Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
  • Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
  • Economic and Social Development-Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.
  • General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change.
  • General Science.

Detailed Syllabus of Paper II is as follows:

  • Comprehension
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  • Decision making and problem solving
  • General mental ability
  • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. — Class X level);

Each right answer of the objective test carries 2 marks and each wrong answer will deduct 1/3rd of a mark (0.33). therefore candidates must mark the answer which are 100% sure.

  1. Civil Service Main Examination

The main examination assesses candidates' intellectual traits and understanding, rather than their information and memory. General Studies papers test a candidate's general awareness of subjects relevant to Civil Services careers. Questions test basic understanding of issues and ability to analyse conflicting socio-economic goals. Candidates must provide relevant, meaningful answers.

Two language papers paper a and b are included. Here candidates can choose Paper A language (any language included in the 8th schedule of Indian Constitution) and There will be a total of seven papers of written exams including two optional subjects. Each paper is for 250 marks. Which makes the total mark of written exam 1750. And an interview session under the title of personality test will be conducted for 275. Thus, the total mark for the exam including personality test is 2025.

Candidates who are choosing literature as optional subject can choose any one of the languages in the eighth schedule of Indian constitution. Apart from the list language in 8th schedule, candidates can also choose English.
