What Does the Latest Kerala SET Government Order Say?

The Government Order clarifies the documents that candidates must produce for obtaining their Kerala SET Certificate in certain situations.

According to the existing SET Prospectus, candidates are admitted to the examination provisionally. The SET Certificate is issued only after verification of the prescribed documents.

The Prospectus requires candidates to produce certificates from a university in Kerala in the following situations:

  1. Candidates possessing a qualifying postgraduate degree in a subject not specified in the SET Prospectus.
  2. Candidates who obtained their qualifying degree from a university outside Kerala.
  3. Candidates who obtained their qualification through Open Universities or Distance Education.

The LBS Centre reported that some candidates were unable to obtain the required Equivalency Certificates because several universities in Kerala were not issuing such certificates for certain subjects.

To address this difficulty, the Government clarified that candidates in the specified categories shall be considered eligible for the award of the SET Certificate if they produce any one of the following documents issued by any university in Kerala:

  • Eligibility Certificate
  • Recognition Certificate
  • Equivalency Certificate

This means candidates are not required to produce all three certificates. Any one of the three specified certificates can be accepted for the purpose covered by the Government Order.

Who Will Benefit from the Latest Kerala SET Equivalency Government Order?

The clarification is particularly relevant to three groups of Kerala SET-qualified candidates.

1. Candidates with Postgraduate Degrees in Subjects Not Listed in the SET Prospectus

Candidates who possess a qualifying postgraduate degree in a subject that is not specified in the SET Prospectus may be required to produce an appropriate certificate from a university in Kerala.

Under the new clarification, such candidates can produce any one of the following:

  • Eligibility Certificate
  • Recognition Certificate
  • Equivalency Certificate

This is important for candidates whose postgraduate subject nomenclature differs from the subjects listed in the SET Prospectus.

2. Candidates Who Obtained Their Degree from Universities Outside Kerala

Candidates who completed their qualifying postgraduate degree from a university outside Kerala may also be required to submit a certificate issued by a university in Kerala.

The new order clarifies that an Eligibility Certificate, Recognition Certificate or Equivalency Certificate can be accepted for this purpose.

This provides an alternative for candidates who are unable to obtain an Equivalency Certificate but can secure another applicable certificate from a university in Kerala.

3. Candidates Who Studied Through Open Universities or Distance Education

Candidates who obtained their qualifications through Open Universities or Distance Education are another important group covered by the clarification.

The LBS Centre had reported difficulties faced by candidates in obtaining equivalency documents from universities in Kerala. The Government has now clarified that any one of the three specified certificates issued by a university in Kerala can be accepted for awarding the SET Certificate.

Candidates should note that the order concerns the documents required for awarding the SET Certificate. It should not be interpreted as automatic recognition of every Open University or Distance Education qualification, irrespective of the applicable recognition and SET eligibility conditions.
